What is New?
Welcome to IWMIDSP-gateway to all IWMI RS/GIS data
and Knowledge. There are many advances from the earlier ß
release in June. The advances include:
1. IWMIDSP Phase III Release Note.
2. Metadata.
3. Dummies Guide to Search for Satellite Images.
4. IWMI Philosophy and Strategy for Spatial Data.
5. Impact Assessment Report.
6. Tsunami Satellite Sensor Data Catalogue (TSSDC).
7. Intellectual Property (IP) Rights
The IWMIDSP data is now coded in 3 colors:
Green:
Free access to anyone in the world. Roughly, 95 % of our data falls
in this category.
Blue:
Restricted access to public- access to IWMI users only. For non-IWMI
users, a message will appear: "Please contact the IWMIDSP
administrator to see whether you can have access to this data".
Roughly, 4 percent of our data falls in this category.
Red:
Highly restricted data with access only to justified requesters.
Roughly, 1 percent of our data falls in this category.
We have also included an access
agreement. We are thankful to Ms. Guat-Hong Teh,
Intern (Data Sharing and IPRs) for advising us on the IP rights
and for providing the access rights document.
8. Ground truth data of the World
Ground truth data of the World is a living dynamic
project on warehousing field-plot data through IWMIDSP. Data consists
of geographic coordinates (lat/long, WGS84), land use categories,
land cover percentages, crop types, cropping pattern, cropping intensity,
digital photos, and other information on natural resources and environments
of many parts of the World. These are high quality field-plot data
made available as a global public good and made freely accessible
and downloadable to anyone in the World. These data were collected
over several years, in different projects, by numerous researchers
from around the World.

Figure 1. Ground truth data points in red. Field-plot
data from over 2000 locations are made available.
9. New river basins, Nations and Regions
with substantial data in IWMIDSP
As you will see from the drop-down menu, we now have
numerous new river basins, Nations and regions for which data has
been added in IWMIDSP. Significant data has been added to: River
basins (Limpopo, Aral-Sea-Basin, Mahaweli-SystemC, Malawi, Huruluweva,
Deduru-Oya), Nations (Cambodia,China,East-Timor,Ghana, India, Iran,
Israel,Myanmar, Sri-Lanka, Syria, Turkey, Vietnam, etc), regions
(South-Asia), and the world.
10. Regional datasets contributions from IWMI
Regional offices
We are getting IWMI regional offices also participate
and contribute to IWMIDSP data. In this regard we have made a beginning
with Ghana data (Thanks to Mr. Falconor) and Aral Sea data (Thanks
to Dr. Iskandar Abdullev and Dr. Platanov). These data include Landsat
ETM+, SRTM dem, LULC, Population, River basins, Road network, Stream-network,
etc…
11. New Mega data sets
Several new exciting mega data sets have been added
to existing IWMIDSP database.
At Global level multiscale 0.01-0.1 degree (1 to 10
kilometer resolution) mega file containing 111 spatial layers that
include surface Reflectance, NDVI, Tree cover, Precipitation, and
1-km DEM has been added. This is the base dataset for Global Irrigated
Area Mapping. The strength of such a dataset will be its application
to multitude of applications and will form a baseline dataset for
the world.

Figure 2. Global multi-scale, multi-sensor
dataset consisting of AVHRR time series, SPOT time series, 1-km
DEM, 40-year precipitation, and 1-km tree cover. This was the base
data layer used in IWMI’s ongoing Global irrigated area mapping.
At regional level, Indian Sub continental
MODIS 500m, mega-file (Reflectance every 8-day, NDVI every 8-day,
and monthly maximum value composite) for period 2001-2003. This
is a base data set for the regional level irrigated area mapping
at 500m pixel.

Figure 3. Subcontinent MODIS 500m mega file for 2001
to 2003; a. every 8-day reflectance data (left image) and b. Monthly
Maximum Value Composites (right image). These are the base datasets
used in the ongoing regional irrigated area mapping.
12. Online data request form
Now user’s can request data using online data
request form.
13. Upcoming
A Global Irrigated Area Map of the World @ the End
of the Last Millennium: ß release!.
